What Causes Persistent Pain In Lower Back Radiating To Thigh?

i have lower back pain that now has traveled to my thighs/backside (shooting pains) and I also cannot walk correctly. I can walk about one block before I experience pain. I need to hold on to a banister when walking up stairs. I am a young 63 yo female - never had any problems - What the heck???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Ma'am,
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your problem.

Apparently you have the symptoms suggestive of a pinched nerve in your lower spine referred to as Sciatica.

This is due to compression of the nerve of your lower limb (thigh and leg) which originates in the lumbosacral region (lower part) of your spine. Because of the compression you get the shooting pains which radiate from lower back to your thigh.

I would recommend you to consult a neurosurgeon for proper evaluation may be you need an X ray of the lower spine and MRI to check the status.

Meanwhile, take some pain killers like Ibuprofen along with Mecobalmine (vit B12) tablets, avoid lifting heavy objects, do not use soft mattress, and take bed rest.

A feed back is highly appreciated.
