What Causes Persistent Pain In The Chest?

Hi. I am 59 years old, and there is a family history of heart disease/cancer. For about the last 3 hours I have had this pain in my chest on the left side. It does not go away with activity. I have been to the ER a couple of times for the same feeling. Once they dismissed it as TMJ, and another time felt that this was all in my head as I am a recipient of mental health care. That said, I am afraid to say anything for fear I will not be taken seriously. So what do I do about the pain? How do I treat it?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Chest pain should never be overlooked and should always be evaluated. Chest pain has a lot of causes, common being due to heart disease, muscle pain or chostochondritis. To rule out the most important cause that is cardiac cause, you need to do at least a stress echo or TMT. If that is negative the cardiac cause is out and you can just take pain killers for the chest pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks,
Dr. Sameer Maheshwari
