Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My sister was down on her knees mopping the floor when she got pain in her leg from the shin down to the top of her foot. She is 55 yrs old and a heavy smoker I might add. She says her leg is swollen and has purplish small bruising all over. Back of leg is tight, front is swollen. It does no help to elevate, rest, or ice it. Its been this way almost 3 days now, she called to make an appt to get in with her dr but they scheduled it a month away, Im just wondering if this could be more serious to where she should be seen right away.
The symptoms of leg swelling, bruising over the leg, tightness of skin and history of smoking suggest Berger's disease.
However, other differentials like deep vein thrombosis, coagulopathy for purplish discolouration of skin etc also need to be kept in mind.
I suggest you consult your surgeon for clinical assessment and relevant investigations like complete blood counts, coagulogram, doppler ultrasound etc.
Clinical assessment and investigations will help to determine the cause of symptoms and thus management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Shailja Puri , Pathologist and Microbiologist
