What Causes Persistent Pain Post Open Inguinal Hernia Repair?

I had open inguinal hernia repair surgery 6 months ago, and i am still having pain that seems to be getting worse. I am a 32 year old female and am fairly active. It feels like there is something pulling or pinching when I cough, laugh hard, strain my voice or just move the wrong way, which is often. I also suffer from lower back pain, mostly on the same side as the hernia, which is the right side. I went back to the surgeon about 4 months after surgery when the pain wasn t all the time, but there was a pinching, and he said it is probably just a nerve, and it will take time to die off. Give it 6 months he said. Now, the doc office says to come back in to get checked out, and that they might refer me to a pain management specialist, but I will have to pay for a regular office visit, seeing that my surgery was over 90 days!! I m a little angry, as we are still dealing with the same issue, and it s not something new.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It can be due to nerve entrapment or any local injury which may be responsible but hernia repair are prone to relapse at many occasions.

Repeat ultrasound and if needed CT scan may also be done. Meanwhile OTC analgesics like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be helpful for symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
