What Causes Persistent Rectal Bleeding?

I have had rectal bleeding for the last two years. I go to Oschner Clinic. I was in the haospital in Jan. 2013, I had a cardiac arrest after an angiogram. I was on a ventilator for five days. I was in there again in March 2013 and again in October 2013. It was after that I started to Bleed with every bowel movement and sometimes just bleed . It comes out bright red. Sometimes I feel pressure and I will just bleed some. It is never continuous. Just when I have a bowel movement or am fixing to have a bowel movement. Please help. MDA

Thank you for contacting US.

please update your age and gender.

Sorry you had been having this for the last 2 years. Looking at your brief summary I think you have coronary artery disease. You may be taking blood thinners which puts at high risk for rectal bleeding.

Have you seen any gastroenterologist for this. If not I would suggest you to see them soonest.

If you have already seen them and did not find answer to the rectal bleeding the possible causes are angiodysplasias which are missed during the colonoscopy. some hemorrhoids also can bleed intermittently which can be missed during the colonoscopy.

Check for any other bleeding tendencies.

If it is angiodysplasia stopping the blood thinners can decrease the rate of recurrence but because of the heart disease you may not be able to stop the blood thinners.

if that is the case you have to check your Hemoglobin more frequently and take blood if it is significantly low. take regular iron, zinc and multivitamin to encourage new blood formation.

good luck.
