What Causes Persistent Sinus Infection?

My mother is taking 50 mg. of Atinalol and also 100 mg. of Losartin/12mg. hypochlothorozide for her blood pressure that just started recently when she moved. She got a very bad sinus infection 5 wks ago and is getting better due to Eurithromyacin 250mg a day antibiotic. She has no energy and sleeps most of the time. She does eat and has been eating but not a great appetite. She is 88. We did see a new Dr. today and he is going to do bloodwork next Monday. He blood pressure is better but she cannot get her energy back. The first 2 high blood pressure meds she took gave her hives and made her feet and legs swell. She has always been in perfect health except for taking 25 mg. of atinalol. She also has tinnitis in her ears. She also has been having anxiety because of all of this. Can this Losartin cause her these effects? She has so many allergic reactions to alot of meds. She also is getting depressed and this new Dr. did give a very mild antidepressant (I do not know the name because I forget the name of it) to take until she sees him again next week. He either suspects a bad sinus infection or the Losartin. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

She has two different set of conditions. Number one its sinusitis for that she needs a different management next comes depression and fatigue for that we need a different management. Let us see one by one.
I) Sinusitis
1) Antihypertensive medications like Losartan does not cause sinusitis.
2) If her sinusitis is recurrent we should rule out the cause whether it is bacterial or viral or sometimes fungal too.
3) Avoid all triggering factors for sinusitis such as dust.
4) Ask her to take steam it really helps in opening her sinuses and helps it drain better.
5) Protect her from direct exposure to cold during the winter season.
6) If everything fails and the chronicity continues we can consider surgical procedures like FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus surgery) which may help the sinuses to drain better.
II) Depression/Fatigue
1) Depression is a common adverse effect of blood pressure lowering drugs like Atenolol which is a beta blocker.
2) If it still continues you can talk to your doctor to switch the medication.
3) Ask her to try relaxation methods like meditation which may help.
4) Mild to moderate physical activity can also reduce depression drastically.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
