What Causes Persistent Swelling On The Lip?

I had a swelling of my lip (bottom) right side that appeared all of a sudden this AM, after applying ice it went away in about 1 HR. This afternoon about 4:30 PM the left side bottom lip swelled. It looks I was in a fight and lost. I have applied ice. Since this was an occurrence that I have never before experienced what do you think is going on?

Hello user,
Welcome to HCM,

There may be many causes for swelling on the lips.

1. Swelling may appear due to a minor trauma which may be not noticeable in the beginning but later becomes more prominent with time.

2.Swelling may also appear due to a hypersensitivity reaction to an insect bite / bug bite. This may lead to redness and wheal formation.

3. Herpes simplex virus infection may lead to formation of blisters which are also known as cold sores. These present as localized swelling on the lips but are associated with severe pain.

4. Also, check if this happens after that as king a certain medicine since some people are allergic to certain medications and it is subjective.

Always look for other systemic features like swelling under the eyes, retention of urine, difficulry in breathing to rule out any major cause at the earliest.

Other wise, your lip swelling doesn't seem to be as cause of concern. You can take one tablet if Fexofenadine 120 mg. This will help in reducing the swelling and itching also, if present.

Hope this helps,

Don't panic,
