What Causes Persistent Throat Congestion Despite Taking Medication?
About three weeks ago, I thought I caught a cold, but now I am not sure. I have been dealing with congestion and using diabetic tussin cough syrup (I am diabetic-type 2) Last week realizing the congestion was not going away, I began to take mucinex. I have alsmost completed the package but I still have congestion, have a lot of phlegm, sometimes difficulty swallowing. Coughing a lot. Tenty years ago I suffered congestive heart failure, but this doesn t feel like the same thing--I can lay down and breath and there is no swelling.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent throat congestion despite taking medication. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like sore throat (viral or bacterial), post nasal drip, sinusitis, granular pharyngitis and acid reflux. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles several times a day , keep your head elevated while sleeping. Consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order test like swab test , viral culture test , CT scan and physical examination with laryngoscope. Doctor may prescribe antibacterial or antiviral depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestants , diphenhydramine and expectorants. You should avoid eating spicy and heavy food , reduce intake of dairy products and avoid smoking.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
