I am 48 and have had normal menstrual cycles my whole life. The last four years have consisted of much heavier periods. This past month I started my period and it lasted for 3 days. I stopped for 5 days and then started bleeding and have been for 26 days. Some days heavy and some light. I went to gyn. They did ultrasound and vaginal ultrasound. I was told my lining was thick. Going in for a biopsy tomorrow. Could this be just hormone changes? My breasts hAve been sore also and some breakouts on my chin

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. frequent, heavy/light & prolonged/ short periods you have with thick endometrium suggests hormonal imbalance mostly due to menopausal changes - Your breast & chin changes also indicate hormonal imbalance. But considering your age it's better to exclude any malignant changes - for that you should go through the endometrial biopsy as already arranged. biopsy will pin point the cause. This will facilitate specific treatment. Which may range from simple cyclical hormonal treatment/ endometrial ablation/ D& C procedure/ hysterectomy- depending on the cause. Thanks.
