What Causes Petechiae All Over Ankle After Undergoing Ankle Surgery?

I had an ankle surgery about 6 weeks ago. I had portions of tibia removed that had a bone spur on it. I also had a portions of bone that died and become infected that were removed. In addition I had a brostrom done as well. I have recently started experiencing severe petechiae all over my ankle and foot and the ankle joint is now warm to touch. What could be the cause of this? I have add appointment with my ortho later on in the week. Should I be concerned?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Petechiae are suggestive of low platelet count. Warm ankle joint is suggestive of infection. I suggest you to consult your orthopedist at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
