Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have experienced a pinched nerve in my neck twice in the last year, none prior. I m in my mid-40s and was wondering whether heavy physical activities such as weight lifting are exacerbating the problem, along with bad posture, which I am trying to resolve by exercises and improved posture. Aside from a crystal ball, it would be great to proactively adjust my exercise program for the long term in a way that enables long term health. I worry being 6 foot 5 inches tall of having spine/neck problems as I move toward the golden years. Are there any specialists/tests that could help provide some insight on which types of activities would be ill advised for me? I would rather develop a long term plan that react to a ruined back later on, if possible. Thank you!
Neck nerves may be pinched by bad posture and excessive exercises may cause the muscles to be tense and spasm which may further pinch the nerves as they run down to reach the arms and hands.
I would recommend you to have a neck x-ray in two projections (anterior and lateral projections). Also, you would benefit if you are seen by a physiotherapist which will help with your posture and also will determine which exercises are helpful in your case and which should be avoided.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj General and Family Physician
