What Causes Pins And Needles In Feet?

When I wake up in the mornings my feet both have pins and needles in them, it has happened every day for the last month, it goes away when I get up and start walking around. Sometimes during the day when I sit down my feet feel like they are swollen but they are not, the skin feels like it is is stretching across them. Should I be worried Thanks Lynda

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are experiencing pins and needles in the feet which could be a sign of nerve damage. Nerve damage commonly occurs due to diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, Nerve entrapment syndromes, alcoholism, MS, hormonal imbalances (including hypothyroidism), injury or nerve compression caused by herniated disk or dislocated bone.

Other factors that can cause nerve damage are traumatic injuries or repetitive stress injuries, bacterial or viral infections and toxic exposures. Peripheral neuropathy affects nerves distant from the brain and spinal cord, often in the hands and feet.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by a Neurologist, get NCV tests, EMG, CT, MRI, nerve biopsy done so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

In the meantime, take food rich in vitamin B12, B6 or supplements as it can correct peripheral neuropathy. You are suggested to keep your weight in check, avoiding exposure to toxins, exercise regularly, take a balanced diet, and avoid alcohol, quit smoking and keep your blood sugar level in control.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
