What Causes Plugged Ears Along With Loss Of Hearing?

My 19 year old son is complaining about one ear being plugged up, similar to when on a plane. Hearing is muffled. He has been blowing his nose for about a week due to slight cold. No pain associated with it as of yet. What remedies do you suggest?

Hi..
Welcome to healthcare magic...
Nothing to worry ..this is very common in children...secondary to common cold he has developed glue ear that is fluid in the ear..how will tell you how the ear is connected to back of nose through a tube which ventilates and drains ear..due to cold thus function is affected which leads to fluid build up in ear causing blocking sensation...
I recommend the following..
1) decongestant nasal drops like xylometazoline helps in ventilating the ear so that fluid will be cleared..
2) tab levocetrizine with phenylephrine once at night helps in ventilating the ear...and relieves cold
3) very important an exercise called valsalva.. Blowing air into mouth keeping the mouth and nose closed (pinching) so we can hear pop up sound this opens the connecting tube and drains the fluid in the ear..the release the closed mouth and nose..this has to be repeated 6 to 8 times day
