Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My baby is of three months. She is being breastfed and getting sufficient supply of milk. She is gaining weight normally too. But she doesn t want to sleep at night. She falls asleep at dawn. She has to be breastfed throughout the night. Any suggestions for me?
She may be breast feeding for comfort or to get herself to sleep.
Breast feeding is definitely the best way to feed your baby. In general, if a baby is feeding consistently, they should be able to get all the milk that they need in 30 to 40 mins. This means that if she starts to fall asleep while feeding, you are to gently wake her up and make her continue till the 30 to 40 mins. If she falls asleep repeated while feeding, she should be woken each time to finish.
If she learns to fall asleep while feeding, she is going to think that she needs to breast feed to sleep.
She should be fed (with as little fuss or noise at night, no singing, no talking, no stimulation at night- its quiet time), then after the 30 to 40 mins of feeding, put down to sleep.
If she gets up shortly after, you know, since she fed well, she's not actually hungry, she's wants to feed to rest. Not a good habit because it means that no one else can get her to sleep but you and would reduce your rest, which you need.
I hope this helps
