General & Family Physician 's  Response
Normally this popping sound is heard due to minute air bubbles which are produced in our joints due to their movement. But in your case it is most likely due to friction and decrease in joint space from wear and tear. Your condition suggest that you need rehabilitation more than surgery now. So contact a rehabilitation specialist.
