What Causes Positive UPT Result Despite Taking Norethisterone?

I am 26 and have had irregular periods since March. The fertility consultant gave me norethisterone to take 5mg three times a day for ten days. The test was negative before I started taking them, have tested today 3 days after taking and have a positive result on pregancy test. Can it be a false positive and should I stop taking the medication

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
A positive UPT is suggestive of an early pregnancy.

Norethisterone is not a contraceptive pill, it is most commonly prescribed to treat or prevent abnormal or unexpected bleeding from the uterus, to postpone the period, etc.

If you had unprotected sex without using a barrier method of contraception (like condom) while taking norethisterone you can become pregnant.

This is particular more likely if you have started the tablet norethisterone after your ovulation and had sex close to ovulation date.

You may get a serum beta hcg test done to confirm the pregnancy and be sure.

Hope this answers your query.
