What Causes Post Nasal Drip And Cough In An Infant?
My grandaughter is 14 days old today, has had cold symptoms( nasal mucus, drainage into throat with phlegm, coughing, some gagging after she breast feeds) for aprox 24 hrs now has a fever of 100.3 at highest but has dropped down to 99.6. Fluctuating slightly through out the day. my daughter is breastfeeding exclusively & she has had same symptoms as grandaughter with addtional upper respiratory symptoms, no antibiotics for her. pediatrician has admitted grandaughter to hospital. My daughter has concerns about a scheduled spinal tap, is this a necessary procedure? I would guess they may be checking for meningitis, is this a common procedure for a newborn with these symptoms?
Understanding your concern. As per your query your infant have symptoms of post nasal drip and cough which are pointing towards sinusitis .There could be many causes for sinusitis like cold ,nasal polyp, respiratory track infection ,deviation of nasal septum and weak immune system due various diseases. You should consult pediatrician so that he can diagnose you properly to find out exact cause , he can review symptoms and take physical examination. Doctor can refer for CT scan and blood test . Treatment of the sinusitis depends upon the cause .If the sinusitis is due to bacterial infection then doctor can prescribe antibiotics along with antihistamines and decongestants which relives the symptoms like post nasal drip.Antihistamines(benadryl) are also effective if the causative factor is allergy. If mucus is thick you can also use mucolytic agent like ambroxol to make mucus thin which can be easily removed . Apart from this you should take steam twice a day which will give relief from congestion , also do warm saline gargles .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
