Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
If you are having chronic
bronchitis, it is characterized with increased sputum and especially at night this might be worse because the sputum collects in the back of the throat and the airways and be responsible of the noises you are hearing. Chronic bronchitis also affects the lung function and might cause
chest tightness and
shortness of breath, especially in exercise.
It is very important that you be evaluated by your doctor and have a test called
spirometry which will evaluate your lung function and guide further treatment.
Taking cough syrups like
acetylcysteine or carbocysteine might help loosen the secretions and help you easier bring them out. Make sure you drink lots of fluids during the day to keep yourself hydrated.
If you are smoking it is crucial to quit smoking as it does effect lungs a lot and might worsen your condition.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
