What Causes Pressure In Hips Followed By Muscle Spasms?

I have a history of pain since I was 20 and most recently my hips have started to spasm forward when I lay down. I have had imaging done and they have shown that I have thoracic spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, 2 Tarlov cysts at S2/3, with right one being larger than left, curving of the spine, bulging disc in lumbar part of back. I have also been diagnosed with chronic hip bursitis in my right hip. The pain and functioning level have continued to get worse, especially in the last 5 months and have applied for disability because I often have to lay down during my waking hours due to pain or back muscle weakness. I have gone to my doctor recently and shown her what happens when I have these spasms when I lay down but she stares at me blankly. What could they be? It seems like pressure builds up and then my hips spasm forward and the pressure is relieved temporarily until the next pressure build. It does not stop until I spasm multiple times and usually spasm so hard that someone looking at me might think I m jumping out of bed.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the severe jerking with pressure in hips may be indicative of various possible issues as

- Focal epilepsy of neurologic disorder
- Chronic ligament problem with secondary changes
- Avascular necrosis of hip joint with compensatory phenomenon
- Gluteal nerve compression
- Chronic myopathy related changes as myositis or other auto immune disorders

A detailed case work up is mandatory for the final diagnosis and further guidelines accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
