What Causes Pressure In The Ear After Treatment Of Ear Infection?

I have had an ear infection in my left ear since last Tuesday. I was a given a Z-pak and Desloratadine 5 MG tablets. It seem to get better, but by Thursday, I was back in the Doctors office and told I had a lot pressure built up. I was given an Rocephin shot, along with a steroid shot. I felt so much better Friday, but Saturday I could feel the pressure building back up and by Monday, I was back in the Doctors office to get another Rocephin shot and another round of antibiotics, Cefdinir 300MG . Now I, my neck hurts and my left side and though my ear is not completely well, I can still feel a little pressure. I don t know what to do. I have a friend whose Aunt that had problems with her ears and went to same Doctor and using and all they could tell was a bad sinus infection. Hers never got better and when went to another doctor, they found out she had cancer. This is scary stuff and I ve never have had an ear infection like this before. It s scary, could explain what my problem might be.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, I want to assure you not to worry too much to the level to consider it a malignancy straight away. Not everyone with such symptoms ends up being diagnosed with cancer.

Discussing the further plan of action, I suggest you go to a specialist as an otological examination is crucial to know the exact cause of pressure build up. As the pressure is getting relieved by the antibiotic shots, there might be some residual infection left in the ear. I suggest you proper blood work (CBC).

The ENT specialist may also like to rule out any wax impaction. Hence I suggest a proper evaluation by a specialist only.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maninder, General & Family Physician
