What Causes Prolonged And Dark Menstrual Bleeding?

My period started early, and now it s going on day 7, but blood stopped coming out on day 5 and it is now a gravy like brown colored discharge. I also got a rash on my bottom after a few days in my period, but I think it s from the pads I was using rubbing against it. I am sexually active with my boyfriend, but we are each others firsts and we do use protection. Why would my period still be going on and having that gravy like, brown discharge?

Thanks for raising your concern and following could be the possibilities:

1. Although brown blood towards end of the menstrual period could be degraded blood [left over] being expelled but still gynecologist opinion should be taken

2. It is also important to distinguish this bleeding from urinary tract infection since they can also cause bleeding and/or brown discharge

3. Since you are sexually active thus certain disease like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease [PID], STI's are common among them thus one has to exclude infection of vagina,cervix,uterus.

4. One should be more concern if it occurs in the beginning of menstrual cycle [since it is caused by clotting].
