What Causes Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding?

I didn't have a period for years then all of a sudden I started some light bleeding which was fine 3 months later I am still bleeding and its getting really heavy and know its almost like I cut myself and how the blood comes out. Well that is how I am bleeding now is there something more serious going on?
