What Causes Prolonged Spotting Post Miscarriage?

I had a miscarriage at about 5 weeks in early April. Went to a doctor about a week after and she cleared me. I had stopped bleeding at that point and am pretty sure that the miscarriage had expelled everything. My first period after the miscarriage started about 2 1/2 weeks ago. The first week was normal....then it seemed to be done but a day later I started lightly bleeding or maybe spotting. This has been going on for about 1 1/2 weeks now. Is this normal? How long does this usually last? I have heard that the first period after the miscarriage can be heavy or longer. I just want to make sure.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Normally after miscarriage a woman may bleed for one week, though some woman may experience bleeding for two weeks after miscarriage, the bleeding slowly tapers and then stops. However, if you are bleeding continuously for more than two weeks, you are suggested to get clinically examined by your gynae, get per vaginal examination done. You may have uncontracted uterus or retained products of conception that needs to be cleared out.

You will be given conservative treatment or a repeat D and E if required. In the meantime, do not do any heavy work and avoid stressful lifestyle. If possible, take a break from work and take adequate rest. Eat home made balanced, nutritious food. Avoid addictions if any, get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
