What Causes Prolonged Spotting?

i spotted last month instead of my period. blood never reached my undwear only when i wiped. this month i started spotting for about 2 days and then i started to bleed. i have been bleeding off and on. sometimes it's there and sometimes it's hardly nothing at all. this has been going on for a little over a week now. can i be pregnant or could it be something else?
