What Causes Prominent External Jugular Veins With Pain?
I have prominent external jugular veins, with the left being very prominent. I frequently have pain in this area but am not sure if it is the muscle around the vein or the vein itself. What do I do? I recently had a mitral valve replacement and expected the swelling here to dissipate but it has not... surgery was 7/20/10. How concerned do I need to be?
I'd be concerned that the valve isn't working correctly, or that you were having symptoms of congestive heart failure. Do you have any shortness of breath? That would also indicate some congestive heart failure. The first thing I would do is see my cardiologist immediately and see if they wanted to increase any blood pressure medication such as your lasix (furosemide). Usually, increased jugular vein distention means the heart is not emptying well, and I'd be quite concerned about this.
I'd get in to see your cardiologist as soon as possible. This doesn't sound like an emergency, unless you're having trouble breathing. I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
