What Causes Protrusion From The Xiphoid Process?

I'm a 19 y/o male. Today while doing yard work, I suddenly had a painful protrusion just to the left of the ziphoid process. This is the 3rd time this has happened. When I stand straight I can push it back in. It seems hard like a bone but is it the cartilage coming loose from the sternum?
