What Causes Purple Colored Lines On The Tongue In An Elderly Woman?
My elderly mother has sesame- like seeds on her tongue.......some whiteness and a purple-like streak near tip. She is 89 and has COPD and uses Spireva and another oral inhalant daily. Could be slight case of thrush - and a bruise , but what are the seeds?
Understanding your concern. As per your query your mother have symptoms of purple colored lines on the tongue which occurs when papillae become irritated and slightly swollen. It could be due to dehydration, stress, improper oral hygiene, hormonal changes or acidic and spicy food.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you to do warm saline rinses 2-3 times a day. Maintain good oral hygiene and drink plenty of water. Take probiotics in diet and avoid sharp and spicy food substances. If condition doesn't get better in few days then consult oral pathologist for proper checkup and rule out condition like herpes or canker sore.
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
