What Causes Purple Discoloration Around The Navel In An Infant?

I have a one and a half month old daughter. She hasn t been having bowel movements like she should the past month. She was going once every week. I talked to the doctor and he told me to dilute her bottle. I ve been doing that every bottle she drinks and she goes every 5 days to a week now. I noticed a week and a half ago that her belly button is like a purple bubble. She has been crying alot and seems like she really doesnt feel good. She has an appointment Thursday afternoon. Can I wait until then or should she be seen ASAP?

1. bluish/purple discoloration around umblicus in infant is usually caused by umblical hernia which are painless and usually go away at the age of 2, and the attending Pediatrician will usually recommend that the hernia to be left alone till the child attains the age of 2-4, as these hernia close on their own

PS. since the intestine is usually not compressed by the abdominal muscles, as such food is able to pass through the intestine despite hernia thus is not dangerous than inguinal hernia.

2. even if the hernia is harmless, one can develop complications like:
. pain or tenderness in the hernia
. if intestine gets blocked by abdominal wall which may cut off the blood supply.
. if child develops fever,or abdomen begins to swell, seek medical attention right away.

3. As umblical hernia is considered harmless by most of the physicians thus there is no need for treatment at home.
