What Causes Purple Discoloration On Lower Legs When Diagnosed With Hyperparathyroidism?

hi i have recently been diagnosed with hyperparathyroid. i have hypothyroid for about 15 years now that is managed with medicine. For about 6 years now i have reddish purple discoloration on my lower legs that started as a bruise but will not go away. Now i have new marks on both legs both are below the knee. i do not have itching, pain, scaliness, or bleeding. My own doctor is perplexed and has done a skin biopsy but the results have not come back. My mom recently saw a show with two doctors talking about skin conditions ike this being part of a thyroid condition. Can you tell me anything about this condition?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. Now you are experiencing symptoms of purple discoloration both legs and below knee. People suffering from hyperparathyroidism are more susceptible to venous issues like deep vein thrombosis (DVT). You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP to confirm diagnosis.

Get few investigations done like blood tests, venography, ultrasound, CT or MRI if required to get the treatment started at the earliest. Depending on the severity of the symptoms detected you will be kept on conservative treatment ( with medicines) or surgery if required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
