What Causes "hot Spots" In The Fingers, Legs And Feet?

My husband is complaining of intermittent "hot spots" in his fingers, legs and bottom of his feet. He is a healthy man with no significant medical history except for two fairly large lipomas on the back of his head (he is having surgery soon). His mother does have lupus, which raises concern. What are possible causes of this and should we be worried?
