I m fit healthy 75 yr old female, no heart probs. about once or 2x month when lying down, my heart races, feels as if it s going to jump out of chest, throbbing moves up towards throat, then stops. This is scary. Should I see my pcp? Sarah in San Francisco
In most cases of heart disease, the palpitations would initially occur or worsen on activity and not at rest.
It would be best to see your doctor to try and determine the cause of the palpitations. In addition to an ECG to take a look at the heart, you would also need blood tests such as thyroid hormone levels and a FBC (full blood count to rule out anemia).
Anemia and high thyroid hormone levels can also cause palpitations.
I hope this helps
