What Causes Radiating Pain From Right Side Of Neck Down To Shoulder Blade?

Hi Dr. Rynne, I have alot going on. The pain and discomfort I m feeling starts on the right side of my neck, all around my shoulder blade. Now, just in the past few days I developed pain on my right side under ribs and when I breathe in it hurts and I hear a gurgling sound. I have had a constant post nasal drip and sore throat. I had a chest x-ray and a throat ultrasound (soft tissue) and they came back negative. I do not have upper chest pains and I am not coughing but when I breathe in it hurts. I ve had in the past few months a colonoscopy and endoscopy and except for a small hiatal hernia all came out negative. I m hoping it s muscle related. Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

Radiating pain from the right side of the neck down to the shoulder blade can have various causes. One possible cause is a muscle strain or tension in the neck and shoulder area. Poor posture, overuse of the muscles, or injury can contribute to this type of pain. Another potential cause could be nerve impingement or compression in the cervical spine (neck region). This can occur due to conditions such as a herniated disc, cervical spondylosis, or nerve root irritation.

These conditions may cause pain that radiates from the neck to the shoulder blade. The pain under the ribs that worsens with breathing and is accompanied by gurgling sounds could potentially be related to the gastrointestinal system. It's possible that it could be related to acid reflux, gastritis, or other digestive issues. However, further evaluation by a healthcare professional is necessary to determine the exact cause.

Given the multiple symptoms you're experiencing, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider who can evaluate your specific situation. They may consider conducting additional tests or imaging studies to help diagnose the underlying cause of your symptoms. They can then provide appropriate treatment options or refer you to a specialist if needed. It's always best to seek medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional who can examine you in person and provide a proper diagnosis based on your specific symptoms and medical history.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. If you require a personalized response, kindly use the Ask A Doctor service and post a follow-up query.
