I have type II diabetes and was on pre-op bariatric surgery diet (high protein, no sugars, no carbs) when I had my pre-op lab work done my levels were Bun 140, Creatinine 2.3, and Potassium 5.6. Could acesulfame potassium be the cause? 55 years old, female, 290 lbs
Hello, acesulfame potassium may be partly responsible for hyperkalemia... or not! It depends on the quantity. If you use it in moderation then it should not be the cause. The most probable causes is compromised renal function and use of aldosterone-converting-enzyme-inhibiting (ACEi) or aldosterone-receptor-blocking (ARB) drugs. Many diabetics use ACEi or ARB or even the newer renin inhibitors like aliskiren. Hyperkalemia is a common side effects of these drugs. Other drugs can cause hyperkalemia as well. A careful review of medications and supplements is always important. Kind Regards!
