What Causes Random Bruising On The Hands?

In the last several months I ve noticed that I get small bruise-like discolorations in my hands. I think they are broken blood vessels. They sting a little. They are not on my skin, they are deeper. They go away in about a week. Could this be a symptom of something serious?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Though the lesions may not necessarily indicate any serious cause, if you are sure that you are not being stung by an insect then, you should be seen to determine the cause. This requires a complete history and physical examination along with blood tests.

In the case of potential bleeding disorders, blood tests such as complete blood count, ESR (looks for inflammation in the body), PT, PTT (both of these looks at the body's ability to clot). Liver function tests would also be needed as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
