What Causes Rapid Heart Rate While On Prednisone And Synthroid?

Hi, Dr. My wife s heart beat is around 90 to 110 most of the time, but sometimes it goes up to 120 per min. and feeling dizzy for hours, it comes and goes, happens randomly, may be a couple of times a week, she is 48 y-old asian female with R. arthritis and taking low dose of prednisone, also taking synthyroid. so do we need to concern about this? and what is the poss. causes? thanks, Dr.

Hello. Welcome to HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Rapid heart rate may be seen in some people as a normal variant or due to stress but we need to rule out important reasons for rapid heart rate also.

My advice to you is -

1. Kindly check your thyroid profile. Over treatment of Hypothyroidism with synthyroid can lead to rapid heart rate (Tachycardia).

2.Ask your doctor to do her ecg and if necessary holter monitoring (24 hrs ecg monitoring). In holter monitoring if any dangerous rhythm abnormalities will be there your doctor can find out.

3. Some medicines are available also which can control heart rate like tab. Ivabradine. But written prescription is required.

4.Do regular yoga and exercise to control heart rate and mental stress. Eat fruits and fresh vegetables.
