What Causes Rapid Heart Rate While Working Out?

I am a 60 year old female who goes to a fitness gym and works out with 3 of my female freinds who are all in the same age group. When we are on the tread mill we all set it at the same speed and incline. We have all noticed that my heart rate goes up to 130+ while theirs still stays at the 80-90 range. I have never seen any of them get close to 100. I am not huffing and puffing and can in fact keep going longer than they can plus do more reps on the other fitness machines. I have sleep apnea and recently found that I have a thickened heart muscle due to that. Could this be why my heart works harder? Is there any reason to worry about this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

After going through your medical details, I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that sleep apnea is obesity related problem. And same is the reason ( obesity ) to develop cardiac health issues. Thickened heart muscle can be because of long standing untreated hypertension and cause of high heart rate. It's recommended for you to get a basic cardiac evaluation done and consult a physician personally for blood pressure management.

Hopefully this information will answer your query.

Kind Regards
Dr. Bhanu Partap
