What Causes Rashes On Buttocks While On Penicillin For Tonsillitis?

Hello, It started off with tonsillitis which lasted for weeks, after having fourx2 penicillin for 10 days, it finally started getting better. I then developed a nasty rash on my bum cheeks and inside the crack, which as I ve been working has chafed like you would not believe. I ve visited a doctor who said it was Thrush (I am a male), I ve used hydrocortisone cream for a week now and still no improvements, I ve had to take a few days off work to litterally lie down and let my bum ease. My glands in my neck and groin are still extremely swollen and sore and my urine is very dark and smelly (even though I ve been drinking pints and pints of water a day). Any advice on what to do would be grateful.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Around 1 out of every 15 people have an allergic reaction to antibiotics, especially one like Penicillin. The hypersensitivity reactions are rash, skin eruptions like maculopapular to exfoliative dermatitis, urticaria, swelling of lip, tongue or throat, dizziness and other serum sickness like reactions, laryngeal edema and anaphylaxis. Delayed reactions resulting from penicillin allergy occurs days or weeks after exposure to the drug and may persist for some time after you stop taking it. These conditions include- rash, joint pain, swelling, swollen lymph nodes, blood in the urine, confusion, increased heartbeat and other signs and symptoms.

Antibiotics and alcohol can cause similar side effects, which are compounded when you take them together. Some medications like penicillin can trigger more severe reactions when taken with alcohol including rashes, itching, flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate etc. The drug should be stopped immediately and inform the prescribing physician. Antihistamine can be used in such type of drug induced allergic reactions.

Take care. Hope I have answered your questions. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
