What Causes Rashes On The Body While On Allopurinol?

I have been on allopurinol for apx. 2 weeks and noticed a rash on my entire body (including legs, feet, arms, hands) starting about three days ago. I suspected that it could be this drug. I am taking it as a result of a severe case of gout occurring at the beginning of july. I feel that I will discontinue taking this drug and contact my primary care physician on Monday. I only wonder if I can just quit...or is any type of weaning process necessary? taking a 300mg tablet once per day. Also, is it acceptable to take an antihistamine, ie, Benadryl?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to an allergic reaction to the use of Allopurinol. I suggest using Benadryl daily. I also suggest using Calamine lotion for local application.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
