Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had hives for the past 3 days. it seems to start in the evening and then by the morning the hives are gone. I recently took in a dog (watching the dog for a friend) but I am not sure if that is the cause. will benedryl help? the hives seem to start in my under arms and spread to my biceps. I also have them on my upper thighs. what can I do to relieve the itching?
Benadryl may help with the hives and the itchiness so its use can be tried. On the other hand the best way to treat allergy is to avoid the cause of it. Use of benadryl or other medications for allergy might not be as effective if you continue to be in contact with the cause of the allergy. On the other hand if you develop swelling of eyes or lips or shortness of breath, this is a severe and life threatening form of allergy and you need to rush in the ER. Be cautious of benadryl as it might cause drowsiness so driving under its effect or doing other activities that need concentration might be dangerous.
I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj General & Family Physician
