What Causes Rectal Bleeding While On Ibuprofen?

I had surgery to my knee, meniuscus repair and ACL cadaver graft and plasty almost 2 week ago. I am taking 800mg Iburpofen 3 x s a day. Today I noticed a light amount of blood on the toilet paper after I wiped after a bowel movement. I also noticed a couple of drops of blood in the toilet. I don t have any pain, but took the Ibuprofen 1 hr ago. I won t take it anymore, due to this. Should I take any other precautions? Do I need to call my orthopedic surgeon that did the surgery?

Hello,

The most common cause of such bleeding are hemorrhoids, but other causes such as anal fissures, colitis, polyps etc may be the cause. Ibuprofen is not a direct cause but it facilitates bleeding as it has a mild blood thinning effect.

I wouldn't take other precautions. You could notify your surgeon but I doubt he can do much more. I would rather see your family physician for a rectal exam to search for the origin of the bleed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
