What Causes Rectal Pain During A Menstrual Period?

I am not sure what this is, but I have sharp rectal pains during mensturation. It is a knife-like pain and even stops me dead in my tracks because I have to stop and let the pain pass. This only happens during my period. Any ideas of what this may be?
