What Causes Recurrent DVT?

I have been diagnosed with my 3rd DVT this week. First one was 13 yrs ago when I was pregnant, the 2nd one was 2 years ago and now this one. The last 2 have been behind my right knee. The first one was extensive-calf to groin. I'm wondering if there is some underlying cause as I am otherwise healthy. what should I be looking at if anything?

Hi, by your description you are a case of Recurrent DVT and should be taking oral anti-coagulation life long. If you are not on anti-coagulation then you should get tested for Thrombophilia screen. It is a blood test which tests for many factors and tells about your blood coagulation parameters. It could tell us whether there are any factors that are leading your blood to be thicker and causing recurrent Thrombosis. Get it done and see a Vascular Surgeon or a Hematologist. You should with their help start oral anticoagulants for long term.
Take care,
Dr Rishi, New Delhi, India.
