What Causes Recurrent UTI In Child?

Sir,      My name is Vinay Kumar from India. My three years old daughter has twice suffered UTI and most of the antibiotics have became resistant. Right now, she seems well but doctor has suggested for her routine urine check up in which it was found that the epithelial cells and pus cells are occasional. Sir, I want to know as to whether there is any situation which requires immediate attention by the doctors or it is normal.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear user,

I really understand your concern.

Two UTIs in girls should trigger an evaluation to rule out an obstruction, vesicoureteric reflux, and dysfunctional voiding. A UTI in children who are severely ill with vomiting and dehydration requires hospitalization and IV antibiotics.

A complete urine analysis, urine culture + sensitivity and an abdominal ultrasound are fundamental for the diagnosis of recurrent UTI.

All the best!
