What Causes Recurrent Constipation While On Laxatives?

My mum is 65 years all her years she has suffered from constipation and would take different forms of laxatives, she had an anal stretch years ago and she was doing fine but the problem reoccurre and the doctor who performed that surgery has retired, can you put me in the right direction? I'm thinking I should take her to a gastrointerologist

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of recurrent constipation while on Laxatives which can occur due to many reasons and it is extremely important to find out the exact cause. It could be due to lack of fibres in diet and due to underlying systemic conditions. Need not to worry. Drink one spoon of honey in warm water daily. This will be really helpful. You should take diet rich in fibres and take plenty of fluids in diet. I would advise you to consult a physician or gastroenterologist and get examination done like complete blood count, stool examination, ultrasound scan of abdomen, colonoscopy. You should start treatment after complete examination. Doctor may prescribe you traditional drugs like lactulose, milk of magnesia and cremaffin or bisacodyl tablets. Light exercises like brisk walk and yoga will be very helpful .
