What Causes Recurrent Cysts On The Fingers?

I had a cyst removed from my middle finger years ago and it has now come back. I do remember the doctor saying that it was a possibility that it would come back. Also, another one has appeared on my thumb on the opposite hand. Is there anything I can do about them (other than surgery) to have them removed.
