What Causes Recurrent Pain On Right Calf Caused After Injury?

I m a professional dancer, mostly in ballet. I have had an injury in my right calf off and on for 10months. The first injury occurred in April 2015. It was a small insignificant jump. I felt a kind of pop. It was a deep pain. I couldn t dance on it for a day. I walked with a limp, then felt normal after several days. There was no incident since then until the first week of December last month. This time I was doing a big jumping combination, but did not feel it happen. In a simple transition step, I noticed pain and finished the combination, then sat out for the rest of class. Again, it took several days to feel normal. That same week, I felt it pop during an insignificant jump. I was limping up until my performance, which was two days after that recent occurrence. I performed. Perhaps 800mg of Ibuprofen plus adrenaline got me through. I went through the last week of December up to this past Monday with no issue. I felt the pain again, though without the violent popping sensation, and not as severely painful. My question is: Do I have a calf strain? Or do I have repeated cramps, or some other condition? Can I treat it myself? My insurance doesn t kick in until April. Thank you, Alfred

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have recurrent pain on right calf caused after injury . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like peripheral neuropathy , injury , gout , soft tissue injury or venous insufficiency . But in your case the symptoms are probably due to injury .You should reduce your weight . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan or x-ray along with blood test and urine test and physical examination to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may also prescribe diuretic along with muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory . Doctor may also recommend surgery in case of any abnormality . For now avoid doing any activities that causes pain
- ICE COMPRESSION over the painful area once in 2-3 hours
- Elevate your leg on a cushion or a pillow while you are lying or sitting down
- Use analgesic anti-inflammatory medications like Advil or Aleve to reduce the pain and inflammation.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
