What Causes Recurrent Respiratory Tract Infection?

I have a history of pneumonia and other respiratory diseases. I have a new infection with lots of mucus. The last time I had a similar infection, my pulmonologist said that I might have non-tuberculous MAI. I am to do a sputum sample and have a cup, but no specific instructions on obtaining the sample. Do I need to wait for morning to take the sample?
