What Causes Recurring Burning Pain In The Feet?

I ve been experiencing a burning pain in the side of my left foot for about a year or more. It is worse with certain shoes and goes away slowly. Boots seem to be the best foot ware for me these days. I can also experience aching pain in both feet if on them for prolonged periods (several hours). In the past it has not been unusual to be on my feet all day. Retired infantryman.
