What Causes Recurring Chest Pain In The Mornings?

I ve been having chest pains when I wake up in the morning for the past 2 months. Sometimes during the day, maybe 2-3 times a week. I ve been to a cardiologist and blood work, going for chemical stress test in a month. I also drink more than I should (6-7 beers over a day, not just evening) From what I can tell, I seem to get more chest pains the LESS I drink. If I drink 8-10 beers in an evening, there seems to be no chest pains until the afternoon of the next day, if at all. Does that even make sense? More beer= less or no pain. Which is worrying me. The game plan is to severely cut back or quit. I m on Atenolol-blood pressure and 20 mg Amitriptyline- depression. Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated, Ken

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of chest pain, visit to Cardiologist, relationship with beer, under treatment with Atenolol for high blood pressure and Amitriptyline for depression.
All the history that you have provided indicates that you may be suffering from the following:
GERD that is gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Costochondritis.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult another Doctor for second opinion and get a clinical examination and investigations done.
Upper GI Endoscopy will help to know about GERD and its effects.
Local pain at the chest can be due to costochondritis.
Stop drinking as the relation you have mentioned as against the normal symptomatology.
Take a PPI like Omeprazole.
Antacid when on empty stomach.
Domperidone if there is GER.
Rest of the treatment as per the cause found.
Control of stress and anxiety play a major role.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
