What Causes Recurring Cough And Phlegm? Suggest Treatments

Hello, I am Madhu, a 35 year old woman. For more than a month now, I ve had a cough on and off.Initially I ignored it. Then I started to take OTC - Actifed Cough & Cold. It was effective, but as soon as the medicine wore off, the cough returned. It started to get progressively more severe, with a wheezing like sound accompanying. Finally I went to a doctor here. He put me on an Azithromycin course for 3 days - 1 tablet every day and also Diphenyl cough syrup for 5 days, 5 ml thrice a day. Also got an X ray taken. It says Prominent bronchovascular markings noted . Everything else in the XRay Chest PA view is normal. After I finished the medicine course, the cough returned, it hasn t yet disappeared completely, and a couple of nights ago had a particularly bad time. Was forced to again take Actifed Cough and Cold, which immediately was effective. Last night was ok. Now I m worried as to whether this cough will ever go away completely or not! I occasionally cough out / blow out of my nose yellow flem. Would you be able to explain this extremely annoying issue?

Dear Friend.
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I have read your query in detail. I understand your concern.
It seems you are suffering from Allergic Bronchitis.
As your chest X ray is normal, i would advise you to get:
1. Hemogram with ESR
2. Sputum for AFB.

In such conditions a clinical examination gives a better idea.
However, you can take drugs like Levocetrizine for symptomatic relief.
Review with Reports.
This is my best advice for you based on available details. If you have any further query please ask me.
I find this answer helpful
